World Mission Sunday 2026

 
One in Christ, United in the Mission
 
Since 1922, the Pontifical Missions Societies through the Society for the Propagation of the Faith has supported the temporal needs of missions as well as created awareness of the work of the missions throughout the world. Some examples include: building churches, pastoral centers, cathedrals damaged by tsunamis and earthquakes, religious houses of formation, homes for the clergy, formation programs for lay missionaries, radio and television production, audio-visual materials for remote mission areas as well as support of pastoral work in various rural dioceses.
The next World Mission Sunday, celebrated annually on the third Sunday in October, will take place on 18 October 2026. The theme, chosen by Pope Leo XIV, One in Christ, United in Mission reflects his moto “In Illo uno unum,” which translates as “In the One, we are one.”
 
Mission Sunday 2026 has a special significance as it commemorates the 100th anniversary of its establishment by Pope Pius XI in 1926.
Coordinated by the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, one of the four Pontifical Mission Societies, the primary aim of Mission Sunday is to foster awareness and support for the missionary work of the Universal Church around the world, especially in mission territories, where the seed of the Gospel is being planted and nourished. It is an opportunity for all the faithful to reawaken within them our call to participate, within our own capacities, in the One Mission of the Church.
 
On Mission Sunday, the faithful are asked to provide financial support for the work of the Holy Father in the support of emerging churches in mission territories and to pray for missionaries serving the People of God in mission territories, both locally and abroad.
